Near Cheomseongdae

Cheomseongdae is an ancient astronomical observatory in Gyeongju, South Korea.

It is the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia, built in the 7th century.

The structure was erected during the reign of Queen Seondeok (632–647).

The tower is about 9 meters high and is built of 365 stones, symbolizing the number of days in a year.

The observatory is now a major historical landmark and a popular tourist destination.

There is such a pavilion in the Hyerim Forest.

This forest is located between Cheomseongdae and Wolseong and is a historical site, as legend has it that it was here that Alji, the founder of the Gyeongju Kim clan, was born. (Historical Site) During the reign of King Talhae of Silla, Haegong heard a rooster crowing in this forest. As he approached, he saw a golden chest hanging from a tree branch and shining brightly. He reported this to the king, and the king personally went to the forest and removed the chest. When he opened the lid, a boy came out. Thus, his surname was Kim and his given name was Alji, and this forest, which was originally called Sirim and Gurim, was renamed Gyerim (Chicken Forest).

Hyerim also came to be used as the national name of Silla. The vast forest is densely populated with ancient trees, including zelkovas, and a small stream flows from the north to the west. The king appointed Alji as the crown prince, but the throne later passed to King Paesa, a member of the Pak royal family, and he never became king. Starting with King Nemul, the Silla Kim clan became the royal family. A stele on the site, erected in 1803 (the third year of King Sunjo's reign) of the Joseon Dynasty, commemorates the birth of Kim Alji.This sacred forest, located near the Silla Royal Palace, is revered as the birthplace of the Silla Kim clan. Even today, the willows and zelkovas of Hyerim seem to block out the sky. In spring, yellow rape blossoms bloom along the hiking trail connecting Daereunwon, Hyerim, and Banwolseong Fortress, adding to the charm of this historic site.

In addition to its natural beauty, Hyerim Forest holds significant historical significance. The surrounding area contains relics of the Silla Dynasty, including the remains of an ancient royal palace and other important archaeological sites. The combination of nature, history, and tranquility in the forest creates a sense of stepping back in time.
